House Insulation
In today's market there are various types of
insulation such as foam panels, spray foam, loose insulation, faced
and unfaced rolled fiberglass, etc. Let's begin with the
foundation and work our way up:
1. Two inch foam panels, 4'x8', are ideal
for insulating a floating cement slab.
a. Begin with three feet of level,
compressed sand
b. Set the cement forms on the perimeter
of the slab
c. Cover 100% of the sand with the two
inch foam panels
d. Put down a vapor barrier of 6 mil.
plastic over the foam
e. Set your rebar in place
f. Pour the six inch concrete slab
2. Insulating foam panels for a basement
and/or wood-framed interior wall.
a. Attach 2"x2" furring strips to the
existing wall, 24" apart
b. Purchase and attach 1 1/2" thick foam
panels between the furring strips with a glue designed for foam
panels
c. Cover the foam panels with drywall
panels or other paneling of your choice
3. Insulating between floors for heat
and/or sound control.
a. Staple six inch thick faced
fiberglass insulation between the floor joists
b. Install the ceiling covering of your
choice; drywall or some type of insulating hanging ceiling
system
4. Insulating exterior walls of a framed
structure.
a. Spray expanding foam around all
windows and doors
b.After the exterior siding is
installed, staple the appropriate thickness, four or six inch,
of faced fiberglass insulation in place
c. Apply six mil. plastic vapor barrier
over the insulation
d. Install the drywall or wall covering
of choice
5. Insulating the ceiling below an attic.
a. Staple at least six inch faced
fiberglass insulation (add more thickness for extreme cold or
hot locations) between the ceiling joists
b. Staple six mil. plastic vapor barrier
to the joists beneath the insulation
c. Install the ceiling drywall or other
ceiling material
d. Ensure that the roof is properly
vented with a ridge vent and eave/soffit vents
6. Insulating an existing cement slab or
basement floor.
a. Install 2'x2' interlocking raised
panels that are constructed of OSB panels glued to dimpled
plastic panels directly onto the slab
b. Cover the panels with the floor
covering of your choice
